Language and Cultural Exchange program (LACE)

  • Do you want to know more about another language or culture?
  • Do you need to practice conversational skills in a second language you've been studying?
  • Would you like to practice your conversational English?
  • Are you preparing for an LSA experience next term?
  • Are you an undergraduate interested in getting to know graduate students?
  • Would you like to learn more about the "American" culture in which you are immersed?

If your answer to any of the questions above is yes, then please read on, because whether an undergraduate or graduate student, from the US or other countries, you are likely to be a good match for a special program at Dartmouth.

Dartmouth's Language and Cultural Exchange program (LACE) facilitates language and cultural exchange between international and domestic graduate and undergraduate students. Sponsored by International Student Programs-OPAL, LACE pairs undergraduate and graduate students interested in improving their ability to converse in second languages, while gaining new insights into cultures other than their own. A typical example of a "Language Pair" (LP) includes an international graduate student who would like to improve his/her English conversational skills, matched with an undergraduate student studying the native language of the graduate student. Mastering conversational skills in a second (or third or fourth!) language comes with constant practice. LPs pledge to meet one-on-one at least once a week at a mutually convenient time and location, in shared conversation and cultural exchange. They can attend LACE and College events together. The Language and Cultural Exchange program is a unique experience that allows students to practice speaking in a different language, while learning more about the cultural traditions of another country.

Is this your first time participating in this kind of exercise? Don't worry! You can always consult Judith Hertog, Dartmouth's English as a Second Language (ESL) Specialist; Stephen Silver from International Student Programs-Office of Pluralism and Leadership (ISP-OPA); or professors from Dartmouth's foreign language departments. LACE will help the exchange remain smooth and useful. Our role, entirely, is to help you.

Past and present LACE participants have shared some very positive thoughts about their involvement in the program. To see what they have to say, click here!

To participate, please complete the LACE Application and send it to the Dartmouth LACE email account: LACE. Also, click here for some helpful language tips provided by Judith Hertog.
