Message from Dean Johnson: Hazing Reforms Update

To the Dartmouth community,

Now that Homecoming is behind us, and we are hearing completion of the first new member initiation period under a strengthened hazing policy, I would like to acknowledge the constructive spirit with which many students--in the Greek community and beyond--have responded to the call for increased accountability and responsibility.

As a community, we cannot tolerate hazing. It is a harmful practice with destructive effects, and it has no place in our environment of learning and intellectual exploration. I appreciate the collaborative way in which Greek leaders have worked with Wes Schaub, our director of Greek Letter Organizations and Societies, to develop and execute new member education programs that help reinforce our policies.

Reporting hazing is essential to banishing it from our campus. We are encouraged that students are increasingly comfortable reporting incidents that they have experienced or witnessed. I know how difficult it can be to come forward in these situations, but I hope that resources such as the anonymous hotline and the possibility of immunity for individuals or groups who come forward and cooperate will empower more students to report harmful behaviors. As outlined in our new policy, we will inform the community of campus hazing violations on a termly basis.

The anti-hazing reforms are one part of wider-ranging efforts to reduce the harm caused by excessive drinking, hazing, and sexual assault, through education, new and strengthened policies, and increased accountability. Complementary efforts include innovative initiatives such as BASICS, and the Peak Performance program for athletes, as well as enhanced training for UGAs.

Student well-being and success are Dartmouth's top priorities. Thanks to the many students and others who have joined our efforts. It is a privilege to be part of such a caring community.

Best regards,

Charlotte Johnson
Dean of the College
