We are one of several departments within the Development Vice Presidency. The purpose of our office is to raise funds from foundations in support of projects and programs at Dartmouth College. We are charged with overseeing and coordinating all fund-raising approaches by the College and professional schools to foundations. To do that:

  • We coordinate and cultivate institutional relations with private foundations in collaboration with faculty, administrators, and Development colleagues throughout the undergraduate college and professional schools.
  • We assist faculty and administrators in identifying those foundations that are most likely to support their initiatives, and advise them on the best way to approach the funders.
  • We offer extensive research assistance and resources, as well as strategic guidance for approaches. In many cases we make initial inquiries. We also provide support for proposal writing, and assistance with stewardship reports to those foundations that have supported Dartmouth.
  • We provide information about giving programs, including any restrictions on the number or timing of proposals from Dartmouth. We often connect people across campus with similar interests, leveraging the projects.
  • We coordinate efforts with the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), which primarily oversees relationships with federal and state agencies, non-profit organizations that are disease-specific (e.g., American Cancer Society), and technology transfer partners. (OSP is a separate department within the jurisdiction of the Office of the Provost, while the Vice President for Development reports to the President. Please visit the affiliated offices page to identify the appropriate contact for your area of the College.)

Our office does not handle or assist with outside fellowships (e.g., Fulbright, National Endowment of the Arts, etc.)
