The Optics in Medicine Laboratory is a consortium of researchers based at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth , and the Dartmouth Medical School. Laboratory members study different aspects of tissue spectroscopy and imaging using visible and near-infrared light. One of the major applications for this type of imaging is for breast cancer characterization using near-infrared light. The combination of highly sensitive light measurements with advanced computed tomography algorithms can provide diagnostic molecular information about the tissue. Medical uses under investigation are in the areas of tumor characterization, neoadjuvant chemotherapy monitoring, surgical margin delineation, and integration in standard clinical imaging systems. Members have funded research from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the Department of Defense.
