Honorary degree citation to Ralph Manuel '58 (Doctor of Humane Letters)
Ralph Manuel
Ralph Manuel '58

When you arrived at Dartmouth in 1954 you immersed yourself in all the College had to offer, and you quickly learned that the opportunities given to you here were a privilege and a gift to be shared. After graduation and service in the Navy, you took on a lifetime commitment to educating young men and women and preparing them to lead a world not yet imagined.

In 1962, you returned to Dartmouth, serving initially in the areas of admissions and student counseling, and then you became our Dean of Freshmen, the first to welcome a coeducational class. Subsequently, as the seventh Dean of the College, you expertly helped guide us toward becoming a more diverse campus. You earned a reputation of being a person of integrity, compassion, and strength-possessed of a deep understanding of the academic enterprise. When you went on to become Superintendent of the Culver Academies in Indiana, you made that strong school even stronger. But you always sustained your Dartmouth connections, as a volunteer and class leader. Indeed, this weekend you are here as President of the 50-year class, the Class of 1958.

You are a devoted baseball fan and fly fisherman. And, through the same discipline and attention to detail that those sports require, you have improved the lives of countless students, staff, and faculty at the many institutions you have served. By title, you have been called Superintendent, Dean, Director, and even Commander, but you have also earned the title, much respected in these parts, "Teacher."

Dartmouth now celebrates your dedication to education and your service to it in many forms and capacities, by proudly awarding you the degree Doctor of Humane Letters.
