Dartmouth Commencement 2008

Honorary degree citation to Richard Hill '41, Tu'42 (Doctor of Laws)
Richard Hill
Richard Hill '41, Tu'42

You have quipped that your life has been a series of missed opportunities to say "no." In truth, it has been your generous capacity to say "yes" that has created a remarkable life, one that has enriched your New England region, your College, and your world.

Saying yes to your mother's wishes, you came to Dartmouth, where you played in a swing band, studied economics, and went on to complete a degree at the Tuck School. Following service in the Navy, a temporary position at the First National Bank of Boston became a career lasting more than four decades, culminating in your election as its Chairman and CEO.  You have also served as President of the International Monetary Conference and as Vice Chairman of the Council on Japan-U.S. Economic Relations, as well as been prominently associated with numerous other local and national organizations and enterprises. Your independent mind and ability to get right to the heart of things has established you as one whose counsel has been widely sought and keenly valued.

You have over the years devoted much time to helping Dartmouth advance. Wearing many hats, including that of chair of its Board of Trustees, you have used your talents to improve the Dartmouth experience for others-including, we happily acknowlege, your own children and grandchildren.

A "yes" from Dick Hill has enriched so many of this nation's finest institutions and organizations. Dartmouth now takes both great pleasure and pride in recognizing your lifetime of achievement and service by awarding you the degree Doctor of Laws.
