Dartmouth Commencement 2006

(Posted 06/11/06)

Honorary degree citation to Maxine Kumin (Doctor of Letters)
Maxine Kumin
Maxine Kumin

Growing up in Germantown, Pennsylvania, you always had a passion for poetry - remembering favorite passages and sharing them with friends. At Radcliffe you majored in history and literature, and gradually you began the work of a writer - the Poetry Business, or "the Pobiz," as you came to call it. You have chronicled, as a poet, realistically and without sentimentality, the daily and seasonal rhythms of our world - returning often to Northern New England. Through your spare text and careful attention to detail you teach simple lessons about the natural world, the animals we live with, and our place in this world. Your book Inside the Halo and Beyond: The Anatomy of a Recovery has inspired us with its courage and strength.

You won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1973 and the Poet's Prize in 1992. Always you have encouraged other writers - especially women and minorities. You have been the Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, your adopted state, and you have also served as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress.

Here on a Plain historically enriched by poetry that evokes a sense of place, Dartmouth College is delighted to recognize a poet who clearly has the granite of New Hampshire in her blood and in her pen, as it now awards you with its degree Doctor of Letters.
