Judd Gregg

A New Hampshire native, you, as did your father before you, have dedicated your life to public service. In the long history of this state, you are the first elected official to have held office not only as a United States Senator, but also, prior to that, as Governor of New Hampshire, as Representative to the United States Congress, and as a member of New Hampshire's Executive Council - a testament to your enduring commitment to, as well as your capacity to understand and represent, the people of this state.

Now in your third Senate term, you sit at the desk once occupied by Daniel Webster, of the Dartmouth Class of 1801. You have become a leader there, currently chairing its Budget Committee. Known as a pragmatic conservative, you have worked to bring about bipartisan cooperation, working to protect environmentally sensitive areas and to improve the public education system. Indeed, when in 2005 you stepped down as chair of the Committee on Higher Education, the higher education community acknowledged the loss of an understanding and supportive friend in that special area.

Dartmouth is proud to count among its alumni yours and Kathy's three children: Molly in the Class of 2000, Sarah in the Class of 2002, and Joshua, a member of today's graduating Class. Also in 1953, Dartmouth recognized your father, Hugh Gregg, with an honorary degree. We are delighted now to have you made part of this alumni group.

It is with gratitude for your public service and appreciation for your friendship that Dartmouth today awards you the degree Doctor of Laws.

- James Wright
