Dartmouth Commencement 2006

(Posted 06/11/06)

Honorary degree citation to Joan Ganz Cooney (Doctor of Arts)
Robert L. Barry '56
Joan Ganz Cooney

Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Miss Piggy and Kermit, Oscar the Grouch - for those of us who are either under the age of thirty-five or who have children or grandchildren, these characters, and so many others, hold a special place in our hearts. And of course, we each have our own favorite.

When in 1969 you created Sesame Street, you adapted commercial techniques to provide children with a vibrant, colorful, smart, funny - as well as educational - show that entertained as well as taught. And it taught not just the ABCs, but also the deeper lessons of how to live a good life - this while becoming one of the most successful television programs ever produced for young children, winning over thirty Daytime Emmys, as well as numerous other awards.

In addition to Sesame Street, the Children's Television Workshop, under your leadership, also developed other programs including The Electric Company. All of these have demonstrated the same imaginative quality and the same commitment to provide children with the best quality programming possible.

In tribute to your career, you received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 and a Daytime Emmy for Lifetime Achievement in 1989.

Here today, at a place where it has always been easy "being green," Dartmouth rejoices to join in recognizing your achievements, with its degree Doctor of Arts.
