Dartmouth College Office of Public Affairs • Press Release Richard Granger, Brain Engineering Laboratory, University of California-Irvine "The field of computation has, from its inception, combined studies from disparate disciplines to address essential questions of information and its manipulation. The William H. Neukom Institute establishes a new and potent center for interdisciplinary and collaborative research in computational science at Dartmouth, providing a coordinated resource promoting creativity and invention. A keystone of the Neukom Institute is its dedication to close interaction among students and faculty, affording new opportunities for students to learn by doing. These hands-on prospects can transform undergraduate studies, imparting enriched insights into the detailed workings of complex systems, often resulting in co-authorships and co-invention. "The mission of the Institute comprises six domains: growth of diverse cross-disciplinary collaborations; aiding coordination of classes and departmental offerings; opportunities for mentoring and apprenticeship; funding and development resources; aiding faculty and students in intellectual property and technology transfer activities; and industry-university relations exploring avenues for support, collaborations, applications, and spin-offs. "By these routes, the Neukom Institute will cultivate computationally grounded studies of fundamental problems in fields throughout the arts and sciences, and will foster the education of a generation of students who will become the new leaders of their fields, and the creators of wholly-new endeavors." |
