Honorary degree citation to Richard Morton Page (Doctor of Laws)
You are a Dartmouth man through and through. During your active business career you excelled in posts around "the girdled earth" distinguishing yourself in a number of senior executive positions within the insurance industry, through to your retirement as Vice Chairman, Director, and Executive Committee member of the Sedgwick Group. From the time you matriculated at Dartmouth in 1950, however, your first love, outside of your family, has always been this College.
Your undergraduate extracurricular passions included crew and the French Club. After Dartmouth, you served for two years in the Army, and from there went on to the Columbia University Law School, graduating in 1959 with a J.D. degree. You once said of your time as a Dartmouth student that it involved "a lasting love affair, with more of it rubbing off on me during those first four years than I realized."
At your commencement in 1954, President John Sloan Dickey said to your class that the Dartmouth relationship between teacher and student was then seemingly at its end - except that, he declared, a relationship "once truly joined, is never dissolved." Your relationship to your College has been extraordinary. The list of your services is too long to be detailed here, but it includes the president of three different Dartmouth clubs; chair of the Will to Excel Campaign and co-chair of the 5oth Reunion Giving Committee; Trustee of the College; and member and past chair of the board of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. But perhaps most important of all, you have shared three of your children with us as members of the Dartmouth family. In grateful recognition of a lifetime of accomplishment and service to your College, we now delight in conferring upon you the degree Doctor of Laws.
