Dartmouth Commencement 2003

Posted 06/08/03

Honorary degree citation to Marilyn Hughes Gaston M.D. (Doctor of Science)
Marilyn Hughes Gaston M.D.

As a youngster, you determined you would be a doctor - indeed, you have described your ambition as wanting to be a physician who worked with the poor, this because, as you have said, "I grew up in the projects and we didn't have any health insurance."

From this beginning you pursued a lifetime commitment to extend health care to those who needed it the most, but who had the least access to it. As Assistant Surgeon General of the United States and the first African American woman to direct the Bureau of Primary Health Care in the Department of Health and Human Services, you advocated the cause of better primary care for the poor and disadvantaged, both across the United States and internationally.

You have given much - and you have made a difference. Now, on a day our graduates set out also we hope to make a difference, it is our privilege to welcome you warmly into the Dartmouth fellowship, with the degree of Doctor of Science.
