Dartmouth's 234th academic year will open on Tuesday, Sept. 23, with Convocation, followed by a Community Cookout. Susan Dentzer, correspondent with The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS and chair of the Dartmouth Board of Trustees, will speak at the ceremony, as will President James Wright and Student Body President Janos D. Marton '04. Convocation will begin at 11 a.m. in Leede Arena of the John W. Berry Sports Center. The Community Cookout, hosted by President James Wright and Susan DeBevoise Wright, will be held on Tuck Mall from noon to 2 p.m. In case of rain, the cookout will be in Thayer Dining Hall. An environmentally friendly room at 103 Lord Hall, a residence hall in the Gold Coast cluster (on the Tuck Mall), will be unveiled at 2 p.m. as well with a brief ceremony at which President James Wright and others will speak. The room features Energy Star computer monitors, a telephone with a cord (cordless phones waste electicity) and compact fluorescent light bulbs, but no television. The project was initiated by students. Classes begin the following day, Wednesday, Sept. 24.
