Statement from Dartmouth Dean of the College James A. Larimore

Posted 08/19/03

Dartmouth is in the process of preparing, for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a report of possible violations of NCAA regulations regarding the Dartmouth Ski Team.

There are a number of possible violations of NCAA regulations that will be reported involving the varsity and development ski teams. Among the issues that we are examining are competitions exceeding the NCAA limit for teams and individuals, impermissible benefits provided to individual athletes for training and competition outside of the Dartmouth Ski Team's competitive season, coaching limits and responsibilities, and practice and competition by individual skiers prior to completing NCAA eligibility certification requirements.

This report comes after a routine rules compliance audit earlier this year, when a series of issues and procedures were discovered that led to an internal investigation of possible violations. That internal investigation is complete, and is subject to final review by the College's Office of Audit and Advisory Services. We are now in the process of notifying potentially affected athletes and their families of the findings as well as preparing the report to the NCAA.

Based on the audit and information currently available, it seems clear that any potential violations in the ski program were inadvertent and demonstrate the need for improved systems of management, education and communication between the Outdoor Programs Office and the compliance and eligibility staff in the Athletic Department. Should Dartmouth need to declare any of the potentially affected athletes ineligible, the College is committed to doing all it can to correct the situation and to help them regain their eligibility for competition.

I expect that the formal reports will be sent to the NCAA by September. The reinstatement process for any affected athletes will begin immediately so as to restore their eligibility for the upcoming ski season. Dartmouth will also provide the NCAA with recommendations for remediating the issues and procedures that led to the possible violations; we expect the NCAA to respond to those recommendations later this year.

Dartmouth has television (satellite uplink) and radio (ISDN) studios available for domestic and international live and taped interviews. For more information, call 603-646-3661 or see our Radio, Television capability webpage.
