Research by Bruce Sacerdote, assistant professor of economics, appears to confirm that the company a student keeps can influence his or her success at college. Sacerdote's study examined the impact that one's roommate has on various factors in a student's experience. He found roommates strongly influence a first-year student's grades and decision to join a fraternity or sorority, but not the choice of major. Sacerdote believes peer effects could be even more significant for students in high school or junior high.
