The Hood Museum of Art will participate in Day With(out) Art in recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1. Day With(out) Art was initiated in 1989 by Visual AIDS as a national day of action and mourning in response to the AIDS crisis. In its first official year, several hundred arts organizations and AIDS groups in the United States participated by closing down museums for the day, sending staff to volunteer at AIDS services, or sponsoring special exhibitions of work about AIDS. Currently, Day With(out) Art is a collaborative project in which an estimated 8,000 museums, galleries, art centers, AIDS service organizations, libraries, high schools, and colleges participate on both the national and international levels.
From Friday, November 29 to Wednesday, December 4, The Hood Museum's sculpture by Joel Shapiro in the Bedford Courtyard at Dartmouth College will be shrouded in black fabric as a gesture of solidarity and remembrance.
This display is free and open to the public. For more information about Day With(out) Art and World AIDS Day, please contact the Hood Museum of Art at (603) 646-2808 or visit the following websites:
