Double dedications scheduled

Posted 11/04/02, by Roland Adams

The Baker-Berry Library dedication will take place on Nov. 8. The Carson Hall dedication will take place on Nov. 9

A two-day celebration marking the dedications of Dartmouth's Baker-Berry Library and of Carson Hall is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9.

The dedications culminate more than 10 years of planning and building Dartmouth's state-of-the-art Berry Library, which was completed in 2000; major renovations to Baker Library, completed this year; and the completion last summer of Carson Hall, the new home of Dartmouth's Department of History.

The schedule of public events for the weekend is:

Baker-Berry dedication

  • Friday, Nov. 8: The dedication of Baker-Berry Library will take place at 4 p.m. in Novack Café on the ground floor of the library. Preceding and following the dedication ceremonies, library staff will offer demonstrations of the new "Digital Library at Dartmouth" as well as "Berry Explorations." The digital library demonstrations will include how to search for eResources, the Digital Publishing Initiative, Document Delivery, Borrow Direct, and the Alumni Portal. These demonstrations will take place on public computers adjacent to the Reference Desk on Level 1 and in the Evans Clerestory Study between Jones Media Center and Evans Map Room on Level 2. There also will be stations set up adjacent to the Reference Desk where alumni guests can see the Digital Library for Alumni and actually sign up for the service on the spot. The "explorations" will offer opportunities to see and hear about many of the new facilities in Berry, including the News Center, Reference Center and Main Street, Jones Media Center, Evans Map Room, Starr Instructional Center, and Class of 1944 Place, among others. "Explorations" will depart from designated areas every five minutes from 3 to 3:45 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Carson Hall

  • Saturday, Nov. 9 : A day-long symposium, "The New Scholarship: Scholarship and Libraries in the 21st Century" begins at 9 a.m. in Filene Auditorum of Moore Hall. Carson Hall will have an open house at 11 a.m. Dedication of Carson Hall will take place at noon in Novack Café. The symposium will include presentations by scholars from Dartmouth and other leading higher education institutions and organizations.
