Re: State Department Alert
The U.S. State Department has issued an alert concerning a possible threat of terrorist activity in Italy for Easter Sunday for the following cities: Venice, Florence, Milan and Verona. The March 27, 2002 Public Announcement advises Americans to take appropriate precautions and exercise care when traveling; avoid public spaces such as clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events; and that Americans should increase their security awareness.
Unless the situation changes significantly, our FSP in Florence and our LSA in Siena will continue as scheduled. The directors of both programs will work closely with students to make sure they understand and observe all the safety recommendations issued by the State Department and will remain in close touch with the College. We encourage students to also stay in close communication with their families about their whereabouts while they are abroad.
We understand that some students and their families may have questions about withdrawing from these programs. While we do not recommend this course of action, if they choose to do so, they may enroll in spring term courses in Hanover and we will make every effort to provide housing.
We will continue to monitor the situation and will work with the program directors to ensure that students receive the support and guidance they need.
Information about the State Department alert is attached to this message and further information may be found at the following website: http://travel.state.gov/.
Students and their families should feel free to contact the College by calling the Dean of Faculty office at 603-646-3999. After hours, call Jamshed Bharucha at 603-643-8490, Lenore Grenoble at 603- 643-2836, or Jane Carroll at 603-298-2782.
