Information regarding Dartmouth's off-campus programs

Posted 11/01/01

This is an informational announcement to anyone who may need to renew his/her passport in the near future:

The State Department has announced that there may be delays on US passport applications that have been mailed into them. You may wish to apply in person to insure quicker processing.

Reports on contact with directors of Off Campus Study Programs:

The Dean of the Faculty Office and the Off-Campus Study Office are in continuous contact with all of Dartmouth's directors abroad. The directors are in touch with all Dartmouth students who are currently studying abroad. We are closely monitoring the situation both in the United States and abroad.

Dartmouth's off-campus study programs are continuing to operate normally, with some delays in a few programs (see below) to allow extra travel time as needed. We have prepared well-developed contingency plans in the case of any emergency. Program directors are maintaining close contact with U.S. officials abroad, as well as daily contact with Dartmouth's Office of the Dean of the Faculty. Students and parents will be notified if any further steps become necessary.

The Dean of the Faculty Office and the Off-Campus Programs Office are aware that the situation is fluid. We remain alert to any changes in the international situation and are monitoring events daily. Our focus now is on those programs whose start date is imminent. In due course, we will be turning to the FSP/LSA programs with a later start date.

All of Dartmouth's Off-Campus Programs are going forward as planned except the following:

St. Petersburg (Russian) -- CANCELLED for reasons unconnected to the terrorist attacks. Everyone will be contacted with further information.

Siena (Italian) -- Start postponed until September 22nd. Arrive in Siena when you can get a ticket; the director is in place.

Rome (Classics), Glasgow (English), South Africa (Environmental Studies), Madrid (Spanish) -- Postponed until September 24. We ask all students on those programs to try to get to their respective cities by that date.

If you have any questions, contact the Dean of the Faculty Office (603) 646-3999 or (603) 646-2736. After hours, contact Jamshed Bharucha, Dean of the Faculty (603) 643-8490, Lenore Grenoble, Assistant Dean of the Humanities (603) 643-2836, and Jane Carroll, Assistant Dean of the Faculty (603) 298-5782.

Dartmouth has television (satellite uplink) and radio (ISDN) studios available for domestic and international live and taped interviews. For more information, call 603-646-3661 or see our Radio, Television capability webpage.
