This year's United Way campaign, "March for the Future," will begin with a kickoff at noon Tuesday, Oct. 9, featuring remarks by Susan DeBevoise Wright, Honorary Chair of the Dartmouth Campaign.
The gathering is open to the Dartmouth community. Vin Vieten, Chair of Campaign 2001 for the Upper Valley, will also speak from the Collis porch and lead participants in a march around the Green, followed by a gathering back at the Collis Center. All are encouraged to walk around the Green to show their support.
Dartmouth's United Way goal is to raise $225,000, a 12 percent increase over last year, in which Dartmouth's contribution was part of the United Way of the Upper Valley's first-ever $1 million campaign.
The United Way held a two-hour national telethon on Sept. 21 to aid the Sept. 11 victims and families, and raised $150 million to meet their immediate and long-term needs. The September 11 Fund has also raised many millions from efforts apart from the telethon, and donations are accepted via Internet form, regular mail and telephone.
"All of these efforts are important," said Bill Hochstin, United Way's Dartmouth Division Chair and Dartmouth's Materials Manager at Procurement Services, "but we are also acutely aware of our local programs' needs, which continue to grow. One third of the population of the Upper Valley receives direct services from the 28 United Way agencies."
Literature describing the local agencies supported by the United Way campaign, United Way staff and information about the campaign will be available at the Collis Center gathering following the march. Members of the Dartmouth community who are interested in volunteering in the campaign should plan to attend this kickoff to pick up materials and receive instructions. For those who cannot attend, Dana Hanson of the United Way will remain at Collis Common Ground until 4 p.m. to distribute materials and answer questions. For information call Bill Hochstin at 646-3020.
