Posted 01/04/01 The U.S. Department of Defense announced recently that it will award $4.5 million in grants to 12 academic investigators around the country to advance the security of the nation's information superhighway. Among the awardees are the co-investigators George Cybenko, Dartmouth's Dorothy and Walter Gramm Professor of Engineering Sciences, and Susan McGrath, a Senior Research Engineer with Dartmouth's Institute for Security Technology Studies (ISTS). Cybenko also heads one of the major research divisions of ISTS, a national center for electronic infrastructure research and related counter terrorism and electronic crime prevention efforts. The awards will enhance the ability of U.S. universities to conduct basic research and related education in science and engineering fields critical to the protection of the national information infrastructure. Effective in fiscal year 2001, the awards will "increase the number of postdoctoral and faculty scientists and engineers conducting high quality research in areas of critical infrastructure protection and information assurance," according to an announcement from the DoD. The grants are made for the first time as part of the DoD-sponsored University Research Initiative. They will provide up to two years of funding. Related links: |
