Kosovar medical professors to discuss health care in Kosovo

Posted 02/07/01

Visiting physicians from the University of Pristina Medical School in Kosovo will discuss health care in Kosovo on Monday, Feb. 12, 7-8:30 p.m. at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Auditorium B. The community is invited.

The speakers are guests of Dartmouth Medical School Feb. 5-13 as part of the Dartmouth/Kosovo project, which includes faculty-student exchanges. The project was established last year to help Pristina revitalize its medical school, providing support and training as well as continuing to raise awareness about ongoing challenges in Kosovo.

Kosovo speakers are Drs. Riza Binishi, Dean, and Faik Hima, Vice Dean, Cardiology. Other doctors visiting are Dukagjin Binishi, Anesthesiologist and Emergency Medicine Specialist; Vetan Hoxha, Director of the University Hospital, Sadi Bexheti, Vice Dean for Finance, Anatomy. The medical school in Pristina had been controlled by Serbians for 10 years until the NATO bombing of 1999. Now the Kosovars are rebuilding their infrastructure and working with the World Health Organization and non-governmental organizations to update their health care and medical education system.
