New Trustee Michael Chu '68 to give Convocation keynote address

Posted 09/15/00

Trustee and keynote speaker Michael Chu, Class of 1968, will lead the Dartmouth community in welcoming the Class of 2004 during Convocation at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Leede Arena.

Joining Chu in opening the College's 231st academic year will be President James Wright and Student Assembly President Jorge A. Miranda '01. Provost Susan Westerberg Prager will preside over the Convocation exercises.

A community cookout and an open house for the new Berry Library will cap a "day of community" at Dartmouth to begin the school year.

Chu, who was elected to the Dartmouth Board of Trustees this spring, is known for his efforts to provide venture capital support to humanitarian projects. He is Chair of ACCION Capital Markets, an international non-profit organization that fights poverty by giving small loans to individuals so they can start their own businesses. He is also the Founding General Partner of Pegasus Venture Capital, which furnishes early-stage venture capital to projects in Latin America.

A native of China who grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay, Chu earned a bachelor's degree with honors in Government at Dartmouth. While a student here, he led the Tucker Foundation's Dartmouth-Talladega Upward Bound program and was the 1968 recipient of the Palaeopitus-Ray W. Smith Award for outstanding leadership. After graduating from Dartmouth, Chu obtained an MBA from Harvard University, where he earned high distinction as a Baker Scholar.

After completing his master's degree, Chu went into consulting, general management and investment and merchant banking. He worked with the Boston Consulting Group, City Investing International and Pace Industries before becoming a limited partner in Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co. in 1989. Chu joined the staff of ACCION in 1993, and served as president and CEO before being named Chair in January 2000.

"Michael Chu brings a tremendous amount of energy to the College as one of its newest trustees," said Dartmouth President JamesWright. "His efforts to support new business and his active involvement in higher education set an excellent example of what can be done with a Dartmouth education."

Hearing enhancement devices may be reserved in advance for Convocation. In addition, a limited number of devices will be distributed from a table in Leede Arena beginning at 10:45 a.m. Special seating arrangements are available for guests with physical disabilities.
