Posted 10/31/00 Commentary on the presidential election by a member of the Dartmouth facultyThe 2000 campaign has left me wondering about the connections voters make between candidate traits and issue positions. Why would someone vote for George Bush just because they think Al Gore is a bully? Why would someone vote for Al Gore just because they think George Bush isn't smart? Shouldn't voters really be concerned with the policy implications of electing one of these two candidates? Perhaps they don't see any -- which raises a lot of possibilities for researchers at Dartmouth and other places to figure out how to help voters make those important connections. |
