Posted 10/31/00 The Hood Museum of Art will host a gallery talk with the National Gallery of Art's Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts, Douglas Lewis, on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. The talk, titled "The Renaissance Portrait Medal as Icon and Emblem" is free and open to the public. It is part of the Hood Museum's exhibition, "The Power of Appearances: Renaissance and Reformation Portrait Prints and Medals," on view through Dec. 3. This exhibition of 62 prints from the National Lending Service of the National Gallery of Art is supplemented with prints, medals, books, and broadsides from five other institutions. It explores the singular nature of Renaissance and Reformation portraiture by examining both naturalistic and idealized images of leading political, religious, and cultural figures such as Queen Elizabeth I, Emperor Maximilian I, and Martin Luther. Highlights include works by the foremost artists of this period, including Albrecht Dürer, Hendrick Goltzius, and Agostino Carracci. For information, call 646-2808.
