Kathy Doherty to lead Outdoor Programs

Kathy Doherty has been appointed Director of Outdoor Programs at Dartmouth effective Jan. 1, 2001, Dean of the College James Larimore announced recently.

Doherty currently works as an Outdoor Education faculty member at the University of New Hampshire's Depatment of Kinesiology.

Doherty's hobbies include hiking, canoeing, cycling, rock climbing and cross-country and telemark skiing. With more than 10 years of experience in outdoor education, including the development of courses for UNH, Doherty will bring a body of knowledge about nature's use as a tool for teaching leadership skills. She has a master's in kinesiology from UNH with emphasis on outdoor education. Kinesiology is the study of the relationship between the body's anatomy and its processes. She has taught courses on rock climbing, backpacking and management of challenges, which focus on skill development, outdoor leadership and experiential theory.

Outdoor Programs was created in 1970 as the Department of Outdoor Affairs to manage the growing Dartmouth Outing Club, the Second College Grant and Moosilauke properties. It was also charged to address environmental issues associated with the College's wilderness properties. Today Outdoor Programs is responsible for the DOC, the Dartmouth Organic Farm, outdoor education seminars and workshops, the Ledyard Canoe Club and the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, among many others.
