Posted 10/17/00 Dartmouth is throwing a birthday party for Aaron Copland, who would have been 100 on Nov. 14. The party -- a big one -- includes an exhibition, several performances, lectures and discussions. Spanning three months in all, the party will honor Copland's memory by examining and enjoying his music and studying his life and influences. The exhibition, "Treasures of the Dartmouth College Libraries and the Copland Archives of the Library of Congress," will be displayed in the Main Corridor of Baker Library Oct.16-Jan. 6, and will feature rare original musical scores, photos and other materials. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will perform a selection of Copland's work in Spaulding Auditorium on Nov. 15. The celebration of Copland's life and work will continue throughout the fall term, including: a lecture-demonstration by Howard Pollack on Oct. 25. A film special, "An Evening of Copland in Film: Of Mice and Men and The City" will take place on Nov. 3, and a HopStop family event "Simple Gifts: Aaron Copland and Shaker Traditions"will take place on Nov. 18. |
