Dartmouth undergraduate competes on Jeopardy!

Posted 11/06/00

Jordan Kovnot, a Dartmouth first-year student from Holland, Penn., will be among 15 of the country's best and brightest college students to match wits in the Jeopardy! College Championship 2000, scheduled to broadcast Nov. 8-21.

Kovnot, who missed four days of college orientation to film the tournament at the University of Washington in Seattle, will appear on the Thursday, Nov. 9, episode of the show. Whether he will appear in later, semi-final rounds of the contest remains to be seen: a confidentiality agreement prevents Kovnot from revealing the results of his contest before the show broadcasts. The two-day final match will be broadcast Nov. 20-21.

More than 3,000 undergraduate students in a dozen cities around the country auditioned to be among the 15 contestants selected for the tournament. Kovnot attended an audition in Philadelphia, where approximately 80 students took a written test before the group was whittled down to 14. This smaller group then played a mock round of Jeopardy.

The college champion takes home a $50,000 prize, a new car and a trophy. In addition, the winner earns a spot of the prestigious Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

In the Upper Valley, Jeopardy airs at 7 p.m. on WNNE, Channel 31. Outside the Upper Valley, check your local listing for dates and times.
