World-class skaters perform in Dartmouth's Holiday Ice Show

Posted 11/16/00

Thompson Arena will be decked in gold and silver this holiday season--gold and silver medals, to be more precise. On Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. members of the Skating Club at Dartmouth will be joined by reigning Olympic gold medalists, Artur Dmitriev and Oksana Kazakova, and U.S. silver medalist Timothy Goebel for the annual Holiday Ice Show.

This year's show is titled "Fascinating Rhythms from Rag to Rap," and is directed by U.S.A. Figure Skating Hall of Famer Michael McGean. This is the first time Olympic gold medalists--each know for innovative and daring skating--will perform in Hanover.

Dmitriev won an Olympic gold medal in 1992 and a silver in 1996 with his previous partner. He recaptured the gold in 1998 with Kazakova , and the pair plans to compete at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. He and Kazakova recently won the 2000 Goodwill Games in Lake Placid, N.Y., scoring three perfect 10s. The duo includes more exciting moves in their exhibition programs than they do in their competitions, and they are the only team in the world to successfully land a quadruple toe loop, a throw considered too dangerous for competition.

Goebel brings his own element of danger to the show. Known for his jumping ability and nicknamed "the Quad King," he was the first American skater to land a quadruple jump and the first skater worldwide to complete a quadruple salchow/triple jump combination in World Champion competition. Goebel recently upset the three-time world champion, Alexei Yagundin, and defeated five-time U.S. champion, Todd Eldredge, winning a gold medal at the Skate America competition.
