Clinton's National Security Advisor Samuel Berger to visit Dartmouth College March 3

Samuel "Sandy" Berger, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, will speak on "Challenges Facing American Foreign Policy" at 4 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Dartmouth College. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will take place in 105 Dartmouth Hall.

Before joining President Bill Clinton's administration following the 1992 presidential election, Berger was Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Bill Clinton during his first presidential campaign. His prior experience in government includes serving as Special Assistant to former New York City Mayor John Lindsay, Legislative Assistant for both former U.S. Senator Harold Hughes (Iowa) and Congressman Joseph Resnick (N.Y.), and Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of State Policy Planning Staff from 1977 to 1980.

Berger also practiced law with the Washington law firm Hogan and Hartson (1973 to 1977 and 1981 to 1992), where he was a partner and headed the firm's international trade group. He received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1967 and his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1971. He is the author of Dollar Harvest (1971), a book on American rural politics.

Berger's speech is sponsored by the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College. Formed in 1982, the Dickey Center works to enhance the international dimension of all that Dartmouth does. The center supports and encourages faculty research on and student involvement in all aspects of international relations. It is named for the College's 12th president, to honor his commitment to international cooperation, liberal arts education and scholarship.
