Dartmouth professor Mary Hudson receives award for excellence

Posted 04/20/00

Mary K. Hudson, Chair of the Physics and Astronomy Department at Dartmouth College and a leader in space research, received the first Celebration of Excellence Award to be granted by Pizzagalli Construction Co. during a luncheon at the Hanover Inn today.

"Mary Hudson's work as a space scientist has distinguished her as a physicist. At the same time, her work as a mentor to students and advocate for the role of women in science has distinguished her as a warm and caring role model," said Angelo Pizzagalli, co-chairman of the South Burlington, Vt., company.

Hudson has done extensive work in radiation belt studies and space weather modeling. She is involved in science committees for NASA and is also a founding member of Dartmouth's Women in Science Program.

Faculty members at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., were also honored as finalists for the award.

The award is given to people "who set examples for others by their commitment to excellence," according to remarks by Pizzagalli.

Dartmouth has television (satellite uplink) and radio (ISDN) studios available for domestic and international live and taped interviews. For more information, call 603-646-3661 or see our Radio, Television capability webpage.
