Dartmouth radio stations honored for best sports play-by-play

Posted 10/09/98

Dartmouth College's student-run radio stations WDCR-AM and WFRD-FM have been honored as part of the New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters' annual "Golden Mike" awards, receiving a first place award for "best sports play-by-play."

The award recognizes the stations and the announcing team of Rick Adams and Taran Lent for their broadcasts of Dartmouth College football.

Awards for outstanding broadcast quality among New Hampshire's radio and television stations were presented at the association's annual convention in Manchester, N.H. on Oct. 2. The Dartmouth football entry was judged the best in the highly-competitive play-by-play category, which featured entries from stations around the state.

"This is a great honor for our stations," said General Manager Jonathan Flynn, a junior from New York, N.Y., who accepted the award on behalf of the stations. "New Hampshire has some outstanding play-by-play announcers, and we're very pleased that Rick and Taran were chosen the best from among those very talented broadcasters."

Adams, a veteran sportscaster and winner of New Hampshire Golden Mike awards in 1981, 1984 and 1985, is in his 12th season as the play-by-play announcer for Big Green football broadcasts on the stations. He has been paired with Lent, a former Dartmouth captain and All-Ivy defensive end, since 1996.

The Dartmouth football broadcasts can be heard each Saturday on WDCR (1340 AM) and WFRD (99.3 FM) beginning one hour before kickoff. The games can also be heard via the Internet at www.broadcast.com

Dartmouth has television (satellite uplink) and radio (ISDN) studios available for domestic and international live and taped interviews. For more information, call 603-646-3661 or see our Radio, Television capability webpage.
