Tsunami relief efforts: Information for Dartmouth student organizations

WHO will get the money?

President Wright is encouraging members of the Dartmouth community to contribute to the tsunami relief efforts.  While students are encouraged to donate money directly to relief organizations, Dartmouth will also facilitate distribution of monies contributed by students and the community on campus.  The donations contributed will be forwarded by the Tucker Foundation to the specific organization chosen by individual contributors.  Contributors can select from 20 organizations designated by USAID.

WHAT can we do?

Clubs, organizations, and teams are encouraged to do what seems appropriate – some may host dinners, concerts, or events, in which case the organizers will select a specific organization to which they are forwarding donations.  Others may prefer to table to ask for donations during lunch or dinner.  In all cases, check with your home department to see about “seed” money if you are having a fundraiser that requires some initial expense.

WHAT can’t we do?

As always, you cannot go door-to-door in the dorms. You can’t mass blitz. You can’t call and ask alumni for donations.  More details on attached.

WHEN?

Dartmouth will conclude this distribution effort on Wednesday, January 19, and forward the money as soon as possible afterwards.  You are, however, encouraged to continue your efforts through the coming terms.

WHERE?

Space is always the scarcest resource on campus so make your reservations immediately.

HOW can we process the donations?

  • If you collect cash or checks deliver them immediately to the financial bookkeeper at your home department.
  • If you want to collect via DA$H, talk to the financial person at your home department in advance to make sure you and they will be able to process the DA$H donations. This is not being done centrally.
  • Individuals can donate from their DA$H accounts or with cash or checks at the Collis Info Desk.
  • Individuals contributions will be accompanied by a form specifying the student’s name, account number (for DA$H), amount of contribution, and organization to which that individual chooses to donate.  Only actual amounts existing in student’s accounts will be distributed.

WHY?

We hope to raise as much money as quickly as possible and get it to the agencies that are helping people. We’ve been told there is no current use for materials or volunteers. As those needs develop, information about how to get involved will be coordinated by the Tucker Foundation.

ADVERTISING

There will be three main forums by which you can advertise your organization’s efforts:

  • Post your event on the calendar in the Collis Reservations Office in 303 Collis, so that the Student Activities Office can advertise on their daily calendars, etc.
  • The bulletin board beside the Collis Info Desk will be designated exclusively for the tsunami disaster related events.
  • stuff2do.dartmouth.edu will also advertise your events.  Please include a link to this website in any other advertisements you may put out (blitzes, etc.).  Blitz stuff2do@dartmouth.edu to become a registered poster to this website.
