Financial Concerns
Students with financial concerns resulting from Hurricane Katrina should contact Ron Hiser, Director of Student Financial Services at (603) 646-3230 or Virginia Hazen, Director of Financial Aid at (800) 443-3605 or (603) 646-2451 to discuss their specific concerns. Students whose personal financial situations have changed because of the hurricane, whether or not they were on financial aid, may be eligible for additional assistance.
Students who do not have financial concerns about tuition or other expenses but who are arriving on campus with few or no personal belongings should be in contact with their Class Dean. The Deans stand ready to help connect students with various local resources as well as with other members of the Dartmouth community who wish provide assistance to students impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Housing Concerns
Several students have asked about the possibility of adding one or more occupants to their on-campus rooms in order to help those students displaced due to Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, a variety of regulations and safety concerns limit the occupancy of individual rooms and buildings. As a result it is not possible to expand the occupancy of student rooms or residences for an entire term. In addition, expanded capacity would aggravate existing overcrowded facilities and exacerbate the associated problems for all resident students. The College has worked closely with the Town of Hanover to identify local housing options and we encourage students to consider other ways they can be of assistance to displaced students and assist with various relief efforts. Dartmouth guests and student visitors are not to maintain residency or prolonged presence in the residence halls or to a room where they are not assigned. Repetition of visits by the same guest(s) or visitor(s) over consecutive periods of time is not permitted.
The College is providing assistance in obtaining housing to incoming special students for the fall term who were displaced by the hurricane.
Academic Concerns
No Dartmouth student will be displaced from a class in which they are already enrolled because of additional special students enrolling at the College in response to Hurricane Katrina.
Students with particular academic concerns should see their Class Dean.
Personal Concerns and Counseling
It is common for this type of tragic event to have a powerful emotional impact even on students not directly affected by the disaster. Although there is no "typical" pattern of responding to a disaster, many people report feelings of shock, numbness, anxiety, and irritability as well as physical symptoms such as headaches and sleeplessness. The staff at Counseling and Human Development (CHD) is prepared to provide short-term counseling services to any students who are affected by this tragedy. We would also be happy to accommodate students who may be interested in participating in group counseling to discuss Katrina's impact. Finally, emergency counseling services are always available to students through Dick's House 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Click here for more information about coping with the emotional impact of Katrina and the services offered at CHD.
In addition, student's Class Deans stand ready to assist, make referrals and/or help students with personal issues. There are many members of the Dartmouth and Upper Valley communities who stand ready to provide assistance. Class Deans can help students access these resources. Upper Class Students should call (603) 646-2243 to schedule a time to meet with their dean and/or to attend open office hours. First Year Students should call (603) 646-2681.
