Policy and FAQs on enrollment requests from students at colleges and universities closed by Hurricane Katrina

As part of a temporary expansion of its Special Community Student Program because of the unusual circumstances of Hurricane Katrina, Dartmouth is pleased to be able to accommodate on a temporary basis academically qualified students who are enrolled at New Orleans and other Gulf coast colleges and universities that have suspended operations because of damages from Hurricane Katrina.   During Dartmouth's fall term, those students will be eligible to take up to three classes per term at Dartmouth. These students will not be required to pay Dartmouth's tuition, but will be required to pay tuition for the term at their home institution, and to provide documentation of health insurance or to purchase the College's student health insurance during the period of time they spend at Dartmouth.  These students will be eligible to purchase individual meals or meal plans. Because Dartmouth student housing is full to maximum capacity, we are not able to provide Dartmouth housing, so these students will need to secure housing off campus within a reasonable distance from the campus. Participants in this program will have the status of "special students" and may earn Dartmouth credits which they may then seek to transfer to their home institutions.

Individuals who have questions about this program or who wish to request application materials for enrollment should contact Julie Bell in the Dean of the College Office at 603-646-3098 or Julie.Bell@Dartmouth.edu

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who is eligible?  Any academically qualified undergraduate student who can confirm that he or she is enrolled as a full-time student in good standing at a college or university that has had to suspend operations for the fall semester/quarter as a consequence of damage from the hurricane.  The student would also need to confirm permission from his or her home institution to take fall-term classes at Dartmouth and also to document that he or she has housing within a reasonable distance from the campus.

Would Dartmouth provide housing?  No, Dartmouth housing facilities are full to maximum capacity and we are only able to provide housing to matriculated Dartmouth students who have already secured College housing through the normal process.  Information about off-campus housing can be obtained from the Rental Housing Office at (603) 646-2170.

Would Dartmouth provide board?  Students may purchase meals at Dartmouth dining facilities.  Students participating in this special program are also eligible to establish accounts that will allow them to charge their meals by using their temporary student ID cards or to purchase a meal plan.

How many courses could special students take per term?  One, two, or three.  (A normal Dartmouth course-load is three.) Enrollment in classes is on a space-available basis, and a student in the Special Community Student Program may not take the place of a matriculated Dartmouth student.  The Non-Recording Option is not available.

For how many terms could special students enroll?  Dartmouth operates on a quarter system.  This option is currently available only for the fall term.  Fall term classes begin Wed., Sept. 21.   Fall term examinations end Wed., Dec. 7.  A decision will be made later in the term about whether to extend the program, informed by whether students' home institutions have been able to resume operations.

How much is tuition?  As noted above, the student will pay tuition for the term at their home institution and provide proof of payment to Dartmouth (i.e. cancelled check or credit card receipt). If payment cannot be made to the home school, then Dartmouth will collect the payment and forward it to the home school when possible. If other educational expenses are incurred at Dartmouth (e.g. board, health insurance, housing, etc.) and the student will have difficulty paying them, he/she should contact Student Financial Services.

What are the deadlines for enrollment and course selection?  Applications are being accepted now.  Completed applications for the program are due no later than Tues., Sept. 20, which is also the first date on which participating students may make course selections.

What courses are participants eligible to take?  Participants are eligible to enroll in an undergraduate course, for which they have the prerequisite or permission if required, on a space-available basis.   Many courses will have space available, but a number have enrollment limits that will have been reached by matriculated undergraduates. Studio Art and Music Instruction courses are not available.

What about transfer credits?   Dartmouth will provide participating students with a transcript confirming successful completion of courses, but it is up to the student to make arrangements with the home institution regarding whether or not transfer credit would be available.

What about access to other College resources and services?   Participating special students will be provided an ID card that will allow them use of the library, athletic facilities, etc.   They may also purchase health insurance through a Dartmouth plan.  In addition, they will have access to a wide variety of other services:  Class Deans, Career Services, Academic Skills Center, and other advisors and programs.   Participating students will be invited to an orientation session and will be assigned an administrative contact or advisor who can provide information and assistance.
