Emergency Preparedness: Updates and Information for the Dartmouth Community
Letter from the President, posted 03/20/03

Dear Friends,

I know that many of you may be concerned about Dartmouth's response given the current world situation. Dartmouth has updated its emergency preparedness and response capabilities and has in place an Emergency Management Group, which is meeting regularly. The College is also in regular contact with local, state and federal authorities as well as with our colleagues at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

You can find information on Dartmouth's preparedness, as well as a list of resources available to Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff, on this website. We will update the site as needed to reflect the College's current preparedness status.

Our off-campus programs are proceeding as scheduled (except for the summer-term program in China, which we have cancelled in response to the CDC travel advisory regarding SARS), and we have faculty and students in programs around the world. The health and safety of our community is uppermost in our minds and we monitor State Department bulletins regularly. Any decision to cancel programs will be taken in consultation with these guidelines. Faculty leaders have reviewed their emergency protocols with their students and have taken additional measures to be extra vigilant. All other College activities are continuing as normal, but we do ask supervisors to be sensitive to staff concerns.

Dartmouth is committed to ensuring that our students, faculty, and staff live, learn and work in a secure environment. We will continue to monitor situations domestically and internationally, and will make information available to students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni through a variety of channels, including the Web site.

As always in difficult times, some members of our community may feel a particular vulnerability. These include those who have family members in the armed forces, and students, faculty, and staff who are from the Middle East or of Arab or Muslim heritage. We need to support and encourage one another.

Sincerely,

James Wright
