James B. Murphy's research draws on empirical research about the effectiveness of moral, civic, and academic curricula in schools in order to make normative arguments about the proper mission of schools and universities. He studies the relation of academic to moral and civic education, the nature of learning, the structure of knowledge, the meaning of rationality, and the essential academic virtues. His arguments about moral and civic education have appeared in "The New York Times," Education Next," and several scholarly journals. Murphy also studies the legal and ethical issues that suround warfare, especially the relationship between law and morality. He has also considered the topic of Intelligent Design from a historic and religious point of view.
