Hudson leads a group of researchers interested in space weather as part of one of the National Science Foundations Science and Technology Centers called the Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling. The center is creating new computational models to predict and prepare for space weather events. Hudson's team focuses on the magnetosphere, the region surrounding Earth where the space shuttles, the International Space Station and Hubble Space Telescope all reside. This area is affected by the Earth's magnetic field and the sun's highly variable emissions, like solar flares or solar wind, which can impact communications and navigation systems ranging from satellite TV reception to GPS location of airplanes and automobiles.
