Gustman has written many articles that examine the importance of pensions and Social Security in saving and retirement behavior. He also has studied public policy questions related to pension regulations and to Social Security, including personal accounts. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, served as co-principal investigator of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), is a member of the Executive Committee of the University of Michigan's Retirement Research Center, and is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance.
