Gerngross brings together expertise in protein chemistry, molecular biology and the fermentation process. His work tries to understand and genetically manipulate microbial cell reactions that used to synthesize complex glycoproteins, which is one of the most challenging issues facing the biopharmaceutical industry today. He also analyzes competing manufacturing technologies and their environmental impact, for example the production of biodegradable polymers. In the spring of 2000, he co-founded GlycoFi, Inc., a biotech company that focuses on the production and engineering of therapeutic proteins.
