Ioana Chitoran, Linguistics

The Syllable As An Emerging Unit of Information, Processing, and Production

Ioana Chitoran (Linguistics & Cognitive Science Program), Rick Granger (Psychological & Brain Sciences)

The purpose of this working group is to initiate a dialogue across the boundaries of linguistics, speech, and neuroscience research, converging on the role of the syllable in production and perception. The proposed point of departure stems from the simple observation, present in all three areas of research, that the syllable corresponds to wave-like alternation, modulation, rhythmic recurrence of events, which have a high potential to elucidate significant questions about speech production, perception, and comprehension.
