New Mexico leads after day one of NCAA Skiing Championships

HANOVER, NH -- Western skiers dominated the Nordic freestyle event at the opening day of the 2003 NCAA Skiing Men's and Women's National Collegiate Championships here today.

The University of New Mexico leads the team scoring after on day, with 169 points. The University of Utah is in second place with 145; the University of Colorado is in third with 138.

New Mexico's Jimmy Vika staked the Lobos to the first-day lead, winning the men's 15-kilometer race in 24:03.9. University of Vermont sophomore Lowell Bailey was second, 30 seconds behind Vika in 24:33.5; Tobias Schwoerer of the University of Alaska-Anchorage was third in 24:36.1.

In the women's 5-kilometer freestyle, Western region skiers took 12 of the top 15 places. Utah's Katrin Smigun won the race in 13:29.7; Alaska-Anchorage's Mandy Kaempf was second in 13:40.9 and Alaska-Fairbanks' Sigrid Aas was third in 13:41.1.

The NCAA Skiing Championships continue Thursday, March 6 with men's and women's giant slalom at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, NH.
