Native American Studies: Facilities

Native American Council

The Native American Council (NAC) coordinates social and cultural activities of interest to Native Americans at Dartmouth and strives to maintain an atmosphere on campus which looks out for the needs of Native American students. The Council meets four to five times each term.

The Council's membership includes the faculty of the Native American Studies Program, the Charles Eastman Fellow, the director and administrative assistant of the Native American Program, the Native American admissions officer, a professor outside the program, Native American student representatives, and other individuals who are appointed from time to time by a vote of current members of the council. They serve for a specific period of time and have voting privileges.

The council has sponsored national conferences on Indian Treaties and International Law, Native Land Claims, Tribal Leadership, Native American Art, Native American Women, and Self-Determination and Education. They have successfully worked to improve the environment at Dartmouth by petitioning the college to give up the Indian symbol and to divest itself from the Hydro Quebec project which destroyed thousands of acres homeland of the Cree Indians.
