In November, 1999, Dartmouth welcomed the return of Chadwick Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation to the Hanover campus. Chief Smith had been the Gordon Russell Visiting Professor in Native American Studies during the Winter Term, 1995, when he taught a course on the political and legal history of the Cherokee Nation and American Indian Law and Policy. He is a longtime friend of the Native American Studies Program. His visit in 1999 came shortly after his election as Principal Chief. Chad spoke on "Rebuilding a Nation: Why the Cherokee Have Decided Not to Support Casino Gaming." It was well received by the Dartmouth community.
