Native American Studies: Off-Campus Programs

Dartmouth-Stanford Exchange Program

The Stanford University - Dartmouth College Student Exchange Program will permit Native American and other undergraduates interested in Native American Studies from both institutions to take advantage of the unique academic opportunities offered by Stanford and Dartmouth, while ensuring that students continue to benefit from the outstanding personal and cultural support servies afforded by each institution's Native American student retention program. The process of intellectual and cultural cross-fertilization will significantly enhance the intellectual vitality and multicultural perspectives of both campus communities.

Stanford and Dartmouth have much to offer one another. Dartmouth has a strong Native American Studies Program with a fine reputation as one of the best in the country.

Part 1: Dartmouth students exchanging at Stanford

Administration: Assistant Dean of the Faculty for Exchange Programs Peter Armstrong

Application Process: Application form and procedure to be drawn up by Department of Off-Campus Activities at Dartmouth with advice from the Dean of the College, Director of the Native American Program, and Chair of the Native American Studies Program. When complete it shall be submitted to Stanford for their information.

Pilot Program: For the first year, the exchange will be open to five (5) Dartmouth students. Students must be in good academic standing both at the time of application and participation in the program. GPA should stand at 3.0 or higher. Priority will be given to Native American students and other students who have demonstrated interest in issues impacting Native Americans on a local, national, and global level. Applicants must have completed at least two courses in Native American Studies. Applicants must show a desire to attent Stanford to learn more about graduate education opportunities at that institution.

The Exchange Program is not open to first year students.

Students should submit a study plan which reflects the relationship of the exchange to his/her major field, academic or career goals, as well as commitment to the continued progress towards the Dartmouth degree. The selection committee will also conduct interviews with the students.

A Review and Selection Committee will meet and select five students from applicant pool.

Before the transfer term, students will coordinate and seek approval for transfer credit from the academic department at Dartmouth for the course(s) in which they will be enrolled at Stanford with three alternate courses chosen for approval. The same procedure which is now used for off-campus transfer credit will be used for the Dartmouth-Stanford Exchange Program.

Review and Selection Committee will consist of five members

  • (1) Class Dean from Dean of College Office
  • (1) Director of Native American Program
  • (1) Director of Off-Campus Programs
  • (1) Chair of Native American Studies
  • (1) Faculty from Native American Studies

Financial: Student pays tuition to Dartmouth and room, board and fees to Stanford, who will provide on-campus housing for the students.

Dartmouth's Financial Aid Office will coordinate efforts with Stanford and facilitate and assist in finalizing financial aid arrangements to ensure no additional financial burder upon individual students is required.

Part 2: Stanford Students exchanging at Dartmouth

Application Process: Students can visit the Stanford Exchange Program website for more information.

Pilot Program: For the first year, the exchange will be open to (5) Stanford students, who have been accepted by Stanford through their own application procedure. Students must be in good academic standing both at the time of application and participation in the program. Stanford will give priority to Native American students and students who have demonstrated interest in issues impacting Native peoples on a local, national and global level. In addition, priority will be given to those students who wish to attend Dartmouth and enroll in its Native American Studies courses.

Students should be upper-classmen at Stanford.

Dartmouth will provide on-campus housing for the exchange students.

Dartmouth will provide an orientation and support program for the Stanford students through its Native American Program.

Dartmouth will abide by the same procedure that Stanford uses for off-campus course credit.

Financial aid considerations are the same as for Dartmouth-Stanford exchange students.
