Welcome by President Ray Burns.
Admissions Office Report and Update by Lee Bitsoi. Explanation of Mr. Bitsoi's dual position in the Office of Financial Aid and the Admissions office. If this arrangement seems to work, the Native American Recruitment Position will not be posted anytime soon. Current statistics for Native students in the Class of 2003: 162 Native applicants and 60 admits. Thirty-seven of those matriculated this fall. Native Fly-in Program was a success. Two hundred applied for the program and 37 were accepted and attended. Thirty of the students plan to apply and four are applying Early Decision. Other recruitment efforts include College Horizons program in New Mexico, the College Fair for the Upward Bound Program in Boulder, CO. Reimbursement for Regional Representation for recruitment events would include lodging, mileage, and booth costs. NAAAD requested a policy statement for the reimbursement option. NAAAD RESPONSE: The need for consistency and keeping the recruitment process stable was stressed. It was suggested that alums come up with a list of major events for recruitment purposes. Some alumni indicated a willingness to attend events themselves to recruit, especially in reimbursement from the Admissions office is a possibility. Others expressed concern that this might encourage the Admissions Office to take a less active role in Native recruiting. NAAAD Report by Ray Burns.

Two NAAAD List-Serves: NAAAD List-serve is used to discuss and keep in contact with other alumni, the NAAAD Info-List is used to post important information to those alumni who do not wish to be bombarded with silly conversation.
Leadership Weekend attended by Ray and Rebecca Skinner: held on campus this past September. The low-down from the Office of Alumni Affairs is that NAAAD must become a self-sufficient organization in the next couple of years. NAAAD must finance its own mailings, meetings and whatever else. It was agreed to set annual dues for the NAAAD at $30.00. Compared to other Alumni groups, we are rather small, with only around 500 alumni. Ray expressed the need for NAAAD to become more proactive and recruit among the older alums. NAD Report by Heather McMillan, Aja Decoteau, and Emily Quetone.
Native American House: installation of peep holes on doors for safety. In addition, TRIBAL SEALS are being painted on the walls of the basement. If your tribe is not listed and would like your tribe's seal represented, e-mail: nad@dartmouth.edu (Acoma, Cherokee, Comanche, HoChunk, Miami, Mohegan, Navajo, Rosebud Sioux, Salt River Pima Maricopa, Three Affiliated Tribes, White Earth.) NAD involvement: co-sponsor campus events and parties. Plan to work with the Hopkins Center to book Indigenous for pow-wow weekend. NAD has refueled the weekly Talking Circles and retreats for every term. There has also been an effort to reach other Native Groups on other campuses. Population of Native students on campus is approximately 79; 50 students are active in Native Americans at Dartmouth. NAD hats and jackets: new orders go in as needed for hats and jackets for those who don't have them yet.

NAS Report by Colin Calloway (via Nicole Adams).
The 18-month-old NAS Major has had 14 majors, 5 minors, and 1 modified major. There were 23 courses with 467 students enrolling. Currently there are five permanent faculty and three adjuncts. This year there will be two academic mentors on campus to teach classes and solidify the communication network and exchange ideas between NAS students, NAD students, the NAP, and NAS. This year's Eastman Fellow is Darren Ranco '93 (Penobscot), the first alumnus to receive it. Funding is secured to help revive the NAS Internship Program. NAS is also collaborating with NAP, Admissions, and Kent Morton in Corporation and Foundation Funding on important proposal to the Education Foundation of America to try to secure support for continuing our mentor/elder-in residence program and other initiatives. Dale Turner, Chris Jocks, and Colin Calloway have started weekly meetings with the four or five students doing honors theses. Message from Linda: check out the NAS website! www.dartmouth.edu/~nas NAVC Report and Update by Ray Burns
From the recommendations made last Spring, there has been no direct response or action taken from the Office of the President. However, through the Dean of the College, some actions have been undertaken which (coincidentally, of course) address some of the issues raised by the NAVC.One of those suggestions were to hire more support staff for the Native American Program. Discussion by NAAAD... Someone has won the Alumni Distinguished Service Award! CONGRATULATIONS! Brainstorm: Ways NAAAD can become more visible and helpful to current students. |
NAAAD Database Project by Neek Ogemageshig '97. This is extremely important to the future of this organization. It will provide us with the foundation to organize and help NAD. Goal for completion: On going.
Graduate Skills Programs provided by Alums listing advice, internship information and profiles on the NAAAD Website. Goal for implementing: none set. A regular newsletter; Nehomah Thundercloud volunteered to work with Heid "to get the word out!" Goal for next mailing: November 1st. (or April 15, whichever comes first) Review and adjust the Constitution of the Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth College to make NAAAD a better working organization (i.e. the addition of "Dues"). Volunteers to review and suggest alternatives are Karen (Brown) Letarte and the Ruling Council. Those who are interested, please contact Ray Burns. Establish an Elections Committee to set protocol for the elections of President and Ruling Council Members. Andre' informed us that the two memorial endowments need to be completed. Contact Ray Burns if you are interested in contributing to these endowments. Decided that NAAAD will draft letter to the college proposing two additional support staff for the Native American Program. A reference goal for the Native American Program would be Humboldt State who maintains an academic advisor and counselor along with the director and administrative assistant. Goal for posting draft on NAAAD Info-list: November 1st. (This is pending NAVC Letter) Open for suggestions. Goal for mailing to Dartmouth: November 15th. Suggestion to meet for dinner Monday evening at 7:00PM in Brick Town to "visit". Meeting adjourned at 9:28PM. NAAAD PRESIDENT REPORT Pow Wow Weekend at Dartmouth, 1999, of course it rained in Hanover. NAD did a terrific job in making the decision to move the Pow Wow to Thompson Arena. Even though the day started out nice, by the time Pow Wow actually started winding up, there was quite a rainstorm. NAAAD had its giveaway and it went well, although it seemed like the NAD students were a little embarrassed and surprised to |
