2009 Highlighted Events

Saturday, May 9

10:30am - Dance and drum registration begins

12:00pm - Grand Entry

Grand entry gets the pow-wow started with a parade of dancers and the presentation of the eagle staff and flags (United States, Canada, P.O.W./M.I.A.).. Drum groups and dancers will honor the "Great Spirit," flags and veterans at this time. Dartmouth student veterans will assist with the presentation of the flags.

12:45pm - Competition begins

2:00pm -  Honoring: President James Wright and Susan DeBevoise Wright

3:00pm - Potato Dance Special

Everyone at pow-wow (spectators included) can participate in this endurance competition. Bring a partner and see if you can outlast the other dancers! Prizes will be awarded. If you want to prepare for the challenge, check out this video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBLNXBkV9cY

4:00pm - Hand Drum Special

An opportunity for individuals to display their individual singing and drumming talents.

4:30pm - Honoring: Elizabeth Sumida Huaman, Acting Associate Director of the Native American Program, Director of Occom Scholars

 

5:30pm - Retire the Colors

6:30pm - Community Dinner with Social Dancing

Join us for an outdoor barbecue on the Green. Everyone is invited and allowed to participate in song and dance socials. No experience necessary, there will be plenty of people to show you the ropes! If it's sunny bring your picnic blanket.

We take time out to honor all mothers on this special day. Everyone can participate.

12:45pm - Competition begins

1:30pm - Head Man/Lady Specials

Our head staff will hold a men's traditional special and a lady's fancy dance special for dancers in those categories. Eliza Yellow Bird '09 and Jiles Pourier '08 will also be conducting a giveaway.

3:00pm - Senior Honoring

The Native American Program and Native Americans at Dartmouth ask that you assist us in honoring the accomplishments of our Native seniors and their friends.

5:30pm - Retire the Colors
