2008 Highlighted Events

Saturday, May 10

10:30am – Dance and drum registration begins

12:00pm – Grand Entry*

Grand entry gets the pow-wow started with a parade of dancers and the presentation of the eagle staff and flags (United States, Canada, P.O.W./M.I.A.)..  Drum groups and dancers will honor the “Great Spirit,” flags and veterans at this time.  Dartmouth student veterans will assist with the presentation of the flags.

12:45pm – Competition begins

1:30pm - Storytelling by Ralph Watah (Klamath Falls, OR)

Young children will enjoy storytelling.

2:00pm – Will Martin ‘08 Honoring*

Native Americans at Dartmouth would like to recognize his outstanding devotion, service and friendship to the Native student community.  NAD requests any others who might want to recognize Will for his friendship and contributions to the Dartmouth community join us.

3:00pm – Potato Dance Special*

Everyone at pow-wow (spectators included) can participate in this endurance competition.  Bring a partner and see if you can outlast the other dancers!  Prizes will be awarded.  If you want to prepare for the challenge, check out this video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBLNXBkV9cY

4:00pm – Hand Drum Special

Sponsored by Cory Cornelius ’07 and Joseph Brewer

An opportunity for individuals to display their individual singing and drumming talents.

4:30pm – Honoring Uriel Barrera-Vasquez ‘98*

Sponsored by Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth (NAAAD)

5:30pm – Retire the Colors

6:30pm – Community Dinner with Social Dancing*

Join us for an outdoor barbecue at the Native American House (35 N. Main Street).  Everyone is invited and allowed to participate in song and dance socials.  No experience necessary, there will be plenty of people to show you the ropes!  If it's sunny bring your picnic blanket.

Sunday, May 11

12:30pm – Mother’s Day Honoring

We take time out to honor all mothers on this special day.  Everyone can participate.

12:45pm – Competition begins

1:30pm – Head Man/Lady Specials

Our head staff will hold a men’s traditional special and a lady’s jingle dance special for dancers in those categories.  Daryl Concha ’11 will also be conducting a giveaway, as this is her first time as head lady dancer.

3:00pm – Senior Honoring*

The Native American Program and Native Americans at Dartmouth ask that you assist us in honoring the accomplishments of our Native seniors and their friends.  The following seniors will be honored: Hillary Abe, Denise Abeita, Precious Benally, Adria Buchanan, Jesse Canedo, Kendri Cesar, Sara del Nido, Lyndsey Girod, Renee Grounds, Corinne Headley, Kannon Lee, Zainep Mahmoud, John Manning, William Martin, Lena Martinez-Watts, Norberto Morales, Nicole Nelson, Uriah Ratliff, AlexAnna Salmon, Ian Tapu, Audra Walters, Shawna Whitehat, Lindsey Wolf, Heather Yazzie
