Attendance Policy

The Dartmouth ORC states the College's policy on class attendance: "Regular class attendance is expected of all students. Though academic schedules may sometimes conflict with College-sponsored or College-recognized extra-curricular events, there are no excused absences for participants in such activities." (p. 96) The emphasis on live musical performance in Music 4 makes regular class attendance particularly critical. Students who anticipate missing a significant number of classes due to conflicts with athletic events, corporate recruiting, or graduate school interviews are strongly advised not to take the course.

Following are the specific policies and procedures regarding attendance in Music 4:

  • Students are expected to occupy one and the same seat in Faulkner throughout the term. This seat will be noted on a seating chart.

  • Attendance will be taken at random times throughout the term. Students not sitting in their usual seat will be marked as absent.

  • All absences will be regarded as unexcused unless the student submits a letter from a class dean or a medical professional providing a bona fide reason for the absence.

  • Students with 3 or more unexcused absences during the term will be penalized a full grade on their final grade report: that is, a grade of A would become a B, a B+ would become a C+, and so on.
