Music of Non-Western Peoples

Course Description

A survey of music and music-making whose origins are in the non-European world. In spring 2001, examples will include West African drumming, Javanese gamelan, North Indian raga, sacred music from the world of Islam, bagpiping, and ritual songs of the Amazonian Indians. A central issue in the course is the convergence of musical tradition and innovation, and of non-Western and Western musical styles and performance practices in contemporary musical life.
